About This Place
Musandam is technically part of Oman but physically separated from it by the UAE — a geographical accident that has kept it relatively undiscovered. The Musandam Peninsula is where the Hajar Mountains reach the sea and stop abruptly — cliffs of 1,800m rising directly from the Persian Gulf.
The fjords (locally called "khors") around Khasab were formed by the same tectonic forces as Norwegian fjords. The most popular way to experience them is a half-day or full-day traditional dhow cruise — wooden boats that wind through the khors while spinner dolphins (in pods of 100+) leap alongside. Kumzar, a village accessible only by boat at the peninsula's northern tip, speaks a unique language mixing Farsi, Arabic, Hindi, and Portuguese — a testament to its maritime history.
Musandam is 1.5 hours by road from Dubai, making it an excellent add-on to a Dubai trip. The Khasab–Dibba ferry cuts through the most spectacular fjord. Mountain villages reached via switchback roads offer gulf views at every turn.

The world's tallest building at 828m — visit the 124th-floor observation deck at sunset for the full Dubai skyline panorama. Below it, Dubai Mall has the world's largest indoor waterfall, an Olympic-sized ice rink, and an aquarium with whale sharks. Plan 3 hours minimum.
Book the Burj Khalifa "At the Top" tickets online — saves 40% vs at-the-door price. Go 45 minutes before sunset for the best light.

Visit at sunset (approx 5:30pm in winter) when the white marble turns rose-gold and the mosque is less crowded than midday. Entry is free — modest dress required.

The capital of Musandam — a compact fishing town with a 17th-century Portuguese-built fort, a lively Friday market where Omani farmers sell fresh dates, dried fish, and spices, and a waterfront lined with traditional dhow boats.
The Friday souk opens at 8am and closes by noon — go early for fresh dates, dried limes (loomi), and Omani halwa.

The historic heart of old Dubai — cross by abra (water taxi, ₹15) from Deira to Bur Dubai, then walk to the Gold Souk (over 380 jewellery shops lining a covered arcade) and the Spice Souk (saffron, frankincense, cardamom, dried roses).

Snorkelling in Telegraph Island Bay
A secluded bay accessible only by dhow — the former British telegraph relay station ruins on a tiny island, surrounded by coral gardens with parrotfish, angelfish, and sea turtles. The water clarity is exceptional — 15m visibility on a typical day.
Travel Tips
Before you go
Carry your passport — you cross from UAE into Oman at the Tibat border checkpoint. Indian passport holders can get Oman visa on arrival (check current rules).
The drive from Dubai to Khasab (via Oman border) takes 2.5–3 hours including the border crossing — leave by 7am to catch the morning dhow cruise.
Book the dhow cruise from Dubai rather than Khasab — operators in Dubai offer better-organised tours with transport included.
Musandam is extremely hot May–September — the October–April window is ideal. Temperatures are 25–32°C with very low humidity.
Alcohol is available in Dubai but not in Musandam (Oman). Stock up if needed before crossing the border.
