Package Overview

Sri Lanka is one of South Asia's most underrated destinations — a teardrop-shaped island with extraordinary diversity packed into a small area. Ancient Buddhist ruins, rolling tea plantations, colonial-era hill towns, wild elephants, pristine Indian Ocean beaches, and extraordinary street food — all within a 3–4 hour drive of each other.

Our 5-night circuit is the classic Sri Lanka loop. Colombo (the capital) → Kandy (the cultural heart, home of the Temple of the Tooth) → Ella (the most beautiful hill country) → Sigiriya (the dramatic 5th-century Lion Rock fortress) → Galle (the UNESCO colonial fort town on the south coast).

Sri Lanka is very close to India — direct flights from Chennai take just 1 hour. The ETA (e-visa) is free and same-day. It's the easiest international destination for Indian travelers, and one of the best value. Best months: November–April for most of Sri Lanka.

Sigiriya — "Lion Rock" 5th-century fortress rising 200m from the jungle (UNESCO)
Dambulla Cave Temple — ancient Buddhist frescoes in volcanic rock caves (UNESCO)
Temple of the Tooth (Kandy) — Buddhism's most sacred relic
Ella — Nine Arch Bridge train journey, tea plantation hike
Galle Fort — UNESCO colonial Dutch fort on the Indian Ocean
Yala National Park — highest leopard density in the world (optional)
Whale watching at Mirissa (optional, season dependent)

Must-Visit Places

Top spots you cannot miss on this trip

Sigiriya Rock Fortress
landmark

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

A 200m vertical granite monolith with the ruins of a 5th-century royal palace on top. The famous mirror wall with ancient graffiti and the celestial fresco gallery of 21 "cloud maidens" are on the ascent.

Climb before 8am — it's cooler, less crowded, and the morning light on the surrounding jungle is spectacular. The climb takes 40 minutes up.

Ella — Nine Arch Bridge
landmark

Ella — Nine Arch Bridge

A colonial-era stone railway viaduct in Ella's green hills — one of Sri Lanka's most photographed landmarks. The Kandy–Ella train ride itself is one of Asia's most scenic railway journeys.

Time the Nine Arch Bridge at the train schedule (10:45am and 6pm are the best departures). The viewpoint is a 15-minute walk from Ella town.

Galle Fort
culture

Galle Fort

A 17th-century Dutch colonial fort-city on Sri Lanka's south coast — UNESCO World Heritage. Pastel colonial buildings, rampart walls overlooking the Indian Ocean, boutique cafes, and independent jewellery shops.

Walk the full 1.3km rampart circuit at sunset. The lighthouse end gives the best views. The fort has some of Sri Lanka's finest restaurants inside the colonial walls.

Whale Watching — Mirissa

Whale Watching — Mirissa

Blue whale and sperm whale watching from Mirissa beach (November–April) — Sri Lanka has one of the world's highest blue whale sighting rates. Dolphins often ride the bow wave.

4–6 hours₹2,000–3,000

Travel Tips

Expert advice before you go

Sri Lanka ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is currently free for Indians — apply at eta.gov.lk (3 business days processing).

Book the Kandy–Ella first-class train 3–4 weeks ahead — it sells out completely.

Sri Lankan cuisine is extraordinary — try kottu roti (chopped flatbread), hoppers (fermented rice crêpes), and the seafood curry in Galle. Carry antacid — the spice level is real.

Roads in Sri Lanka are slow — 300km can take 6–7 hours. Don't over-schedule driving days. Take the train wherever possible.

Sri Lanka is like a smaller, slower India but with better beaches, better roads, and cheaper food. The Kandy-Ella train was the most beautiful journey. Sigiriya is breathtaking. Perfect first international trip.

We came to Sri Lanka after India and loved it. So much easier to navigate than India — everything is close together. Galle Fort is gorgeous. YlooTrips sorted the ETA and everything was smooth.
