Must-Visit Places
Top spots you cannot miss on this trip
Rohtang Pass (3,978m)
A high-altitude mountain pass on the Kullu–Lahaul divide, covered in snow year-round. The first glimpse of the moonscape Lahaul Valley from the pass top is one of the most dramatic transition points in the Himalayas.
Rohtang permit is mandatory (book online at rohtangpermits.nic.in, 2 days ahead). Petrol vehicles only until 10am. Start from Manali by 6:30am to cross before permit cutoff.
Solang Valley
14km north of Manali, Solang is Manali's main adventure hub — zorbing, rope way, paragliding, skiing (winter), and snowmobiling in a dramatic bowl surrounded by Himalayan peaks.
Rope way (ropeway) tickets sell out by 11am in season — arrive at 9am. The top station (2,480m) has excellent views and snow year-round.
Hadimba Devi Temple
A 450-year-old wooden pagoda temple dedicated to Hadimba (from the Mahabharata), built directly over a cave and surrounded by ancient deodar cedar forest. One of Himachal's most architecturally unique religious sites.
Visit early morning (8am) before the yak-photo touts and crowds arrive. The cedar forest behind the temple is peaceful and leads to a small hidden waterfall.
Old Manali & Tibetan Market
The older village above Mall Road has a completely different character — Israeli bakeries, Tibetan thangka shops, hemp cafes, and the original Manu Maharishi temple perched on a hillside with views over the Beas Valley.
Explore the Tibetan Refugee Market near the old bus stand for handmade woollen goods, prayer flags, and Tibetan jewellery at fraction of tourist shop prices.
Experiences & Activities
What you'll do on this trip
Beas River White-Water Rafting
Raft Grade 2–4 rapids on the Beas River through gorges and pine forests. The Pirdi–Jhiri stretch (14km) is the classic route — cold, clear glacial water and excellent riverside scenery.
Rohtang Snow Activities
At Rohtang Pass — snow tubing, snowmobile rides, yak rides, and tobogganing on permanent snow slopes. Gear rental (snow suits, boots, gloves) available at the base.
Solang Valley Paragliding
Tandem paraglide from the Solang Valley ridge with a certified pilot — a 10-minute flight over the valley with views of Deo Tibba and the Kullu peaks.
Travel Tips
Expert advice before you go
Best months: May–June (snow on Rohtang, green valley), September–October (clear skies, post-monsoon). July–August is monsoon — beautiful but landslides are common.
Rohtang Pass permit is mandatory — book at rohtangpermits.nic.in 2 days ahead. Only 1,200 petrol vehicles per day allowed (quota fills fast in May–June).
Manali is at 2,050m — some visitors get mild altitude headaches on the first day. Rest, hydrate, and avoid alcohol on arrival night.
Carry warm clothing even in summer — Rohtang Pass is 0–5°C, Solang Valley 10–15°C, and Manali town 15–25°C in the same day.
Mall Road has good ATMs but can be slow on weekends. Withdraw cash before the weekend rush.
The Volvo buses from Delhi to Manali (12 hrs overnight, ₹1,800–2,500) are comfortable and scenic. Or fly Delhi → Kullu (Bhuntar Airport, 1 hr), then 50km taxi to Manali.
