The train from Kandy to Ella (6 hours, 180km) is listed among the world's most beautiful rail journeys. The blue train clings to narrow ridges above tea plantation valleys, crosses colonial stone viaducts, and tunnels through jungle before arriving at Ella's tiny three-platform station. The journey alone is worth the trip.
Ella itself is a village of perhaps 2,000 people along one main road. The Nine Arch Bridge — a colonial-era stone bridge of nine perfect arches rising 24m above the forest — is best seen from the jungle at the precise moment a train crosses it. Little Adam's Peak (1,141m) is a 45-minute hike from town with sunrise views over the entire hill country. Ella Rock is a harder 3-hour return through jungle and abandoned tea estates.
Sri Lanka is 1.5 hours from Chennai and 2.5 hours from Mumbai by air. Budget resorts in Ella offer valley views for ₹1,500–3,000 per night. The country is compact enough to combine Ella with Galle's Dutch fort, Sigiriya rock, and Yala leopard safaris in 8 days.

landmarkNine Arch Bridge
Sri Lanka's most photographed landmark — a 91m colonial stone viaduct of nine perfect arches rising 24m above the jungle. Built in 1921 without steel (replaced by stone when WWI cut off metal supplies). Best photographed from the surrounding jungle when a blue train crosses at 9am or 3pm.
Check the train timetable at Ella station and position yourself in the jungle 20 mins before crossing time for the perfect shot.
landmarkSigiriya Rock Fortress
A 5th-century royal palace built on a 200m vertical granite rock — with frescoed cave paintings, the mirror wall of polished plaster, and ruins of water gardens and lion-paw gate. UNESCO World Heritage. Sigiriya is 3 hours from Ella and worth an overnight detour.
Climb before 7am to beat both the heat and the crowds — the top platform with 360° jungle views is extraordinary in the early mist.

A 16th-century Portuguese fort expanded by the Dutch — a UNESCO World Heritage town of winding cobbled streets, coral-and-granite ramparts, lighthouses, and boutique hotels inside colonial buildings. Sunsets from the rampart walls are among Sri Lanka's finest.
Stay inside the fort walls for a night — heritage guesthouses are compact but the atmosphere after day-trippers leave is magical.
natureYala National Park — Leopard Safari
The world's highest density of leopards per square kilometre — a morning jeep safari gives better odds of a leopard sighting than anywhere in Africa. Sri Lankan leopards are larger and bolder than Indian ones. Yala is 2.5 hours from Ella.
Book a 6am half-day safari (₹3,500–5,000 per jeep including entry). Block 5 (the most popular zone) has the highest leopard density.
experienceTemple of the Tooth, Kandy
Sri Lanka's holiest Buddhist site — a 17th-century golden-roofed temple housing a relic of the Buddha's tooth. The evening puja ceremony at 6:30pm, with drummers, chanting monks, and incense filling the colonial-era complex, is extraordinary. Kandy is 3 hours from Ella.
Arrive 30 minutes before the evening puja and queue on the left side for a closer view of the golden relic chamber.

Kandy–Ella Scenic Train Ride
The most beautiful rail journey in Asia — 6 hours from Kandy to Ella through misty tea plantations, cloud forest, colonial viaducts, and waterfall views. Sit on the right side (facing Ella direction) for the best views. Book 3rd class observation car for open doorways.
Little Adam's Peak Sunrise Hike
A 45-minute hike from Ella town through tea estates and jungle to the summit of Little Adam's Peak (1,141m). The sunrise panorama over Ella Gap — a valley splitting two mountain ranges — is one of Sri Lanka's finest views. Guides not required.
Tea Factory & Plantation Tour
Visit a working tea factory in the estates above Ella — see the four stages of Ceylon tea production (withering, rolling, oxidation, drying), learn to distinguish grades, and taste fresh-picked tea. Lipton's Seat viewpoint offers 360° estate panoramas.
White Water Rafting — Kitulgala
Grade 3–4 rapids on the Kelani River at Kitulgala (near Kandy), with 16 rapids including a famous swimming hole beneath a waterfall. Best in the rivers' high-flow season (June–August). One of Sri Lanka's top adventure experiences.

Before you go
Book the Kandy–Ella train online at www.railway.gov.lk at least 3 weeks in advance — seats sell out fast, especially observation car and 1st class.
Carry cash (Sri Lankan Rupees) in Ella — many smaller restaurants and guesthouses don't accept cards.
The Nine Arch Bridge train crossing times are roughly 9:10am and 3:20pm (check at Ella station on arrival — times shift seasonally).
Book Yala safari jeeps at your Ella guesthouse the day before — arrange a driver who takes you Ella → Yala → Galle in one day for best value.
Ella is cool at night (15–18°C) — carry a light jacket even in summer.
