About This Place
In July 1992, the Ambassador of Switzerland to India stood in the middle of this meadow, stuck a Swiss flag in the ground, and officially declared Khajjiar to be "Mini Switzerland". A plaque marks the spot. The comparison holds up.
Khajjiar is a perfectly round meadow — a natural amphitheatre formed by ancient geological uplift. The circular shape is 1.5km across, ringed on all sides by dense deodar cedar forest that creates the sensation of a natural stadium. At the center, a small natural lake hovers on a floating island of peat.
The 12th-century Khajji Nag Temple sits at the meadow's edge, dedicated to the serpent king worshipped by the Gaddis tribe who still bring their cattle here in summer. Paragliding operators launch from the forest edge. In winter, the meadow fills with 3 feet of snow. Despite the famous designation, Khajjiar receives a fraction of the visitors that Shimla or Manali attract — a remarkable oversight that the meadow's tranquility is grateful for.

natureKhajjiar Meadow — The Swiss Plaque
A perfectly circular saucer-shaped meadow 1.5km across at 1,996m altitude, ringed entirely by dense deodar cedar forest. At its centre, a natural lake floats on a bed of peat. The Swiss flag plaque marks the official "Mini Switzerland" comparison.
The meadow is best in the early morning before ponies, hawkers, and families arrive. Walk the full perimeter (5km loop) along the forest edge for a completely different and quiet experience.
landmarkKhajji Nag Temple
A 12th-century stone temple dedicated to the serpent god Khajji Nag, worshipped by the Gaddi tribal shepherds. Located at the meadow's edge, it predates the "Mini Switzerland" designation by 800 years.
The annual Khajjiar fair in May brings Gaddi shepherds from across the Dhauladhar range — colourful, authentic, and completely untouristy.
landmarkDalhousie Old Town — Gandhi Chowk
24km from Khajjiar, Dalhousie's old colonial bungalows and the crumbling Christ Church (1863) make for excellent walking. The town was a British hill station — the architecture tells that story clearly.
Dalhousie's Satdhara Falls (5km from town) are lovely and almost completely empty — ask your hotel for the trail.
natureKalatop Wildlife Sanctuary
A 30 sq km dense deodar cedar forest between Dalhousie and Khajjiar, home to Himalayan black bears, leopards, and over 150 bird species. The forest walk from Dalhousie to Khajjiar through Kalatop is one of Himachal's finest.
Hire a local guide (₹500) at the forest gate. The trail is 10km and takes 4 hours. Carry a permit (₹50 from the forest office in Dalhousie).

Snow Activities (Dec–Feb)
When Khajjiar is under 4–6 feet of snow, the meadow becomes a natural sledding bowl. Local operators rent sleds and introduce visitors to snow-walking.
Kalatop Trek — Dalhousie to Khajjiar
A 10km forest trek through the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, descending from Dalhousie through ancient cedar groves to the Khajjiar meadow. Chance sightings of Himalayan birds and occasional wildlife.
Travel Tips
Before you go
May–June and September–October are ideal — clear skies and pleasant 15–25°C temperatures.
December–February brings snow — beautiful but the road from Dalhousie to Khajjiar may need chains. Confirm with your driver.
Khajjiar has very limited hotels — book well ahead in May–June peak season. Dalhousie has more options (24km).
Combine with Dharamshala (5 hrs) or Pathankot (90km) for a wider Himachal itinerary.
The 3km circular meadow walk takes 45 minutes — avoid the horse rides that dominate the centre and walk the quiet forest perimeter instead.
No ATMs in Khajjiar village — withdraw cash in Dalhousie before coming.
