Chopta
The meadow most Indians haven't heard of — base of the world's highest Shiva temple
About This Place
Chopta sits quietly above the treeline in Uttarakhand — a rolling green meadow ringed by oak and rhododendron forests, offering direct sightlines to the highest Himalayan peaks in Garhwal. While nearby Kedarnath draws half a million pilgrims, Chopta receives a fraction, yet delivers the same grandeur at a fraction of the effort.
The 3.5km trail to Tungnath (3,680m), the world's highest Shiva temple, passes through dense forest alive with monal pheasants and Himalayan monals. Push another 1.5km to Chandrashila peak (4,130m) for a 360° panorama of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedarnath and Chaukhamba in one sweep.
In April and May, the rhododendron forests erupt in scarlet. In winter, the trail is buried under 6 feet of snow and the entire meadow is empty. Chopta has no luxury hotels — just basic guesthouses and a handful of camp operators — which is precisely why it remains one of Uttarakhand's finest secrets.

Must-Visit Places
Best spots near Chopta
Tungnath Temple
The world's highest Shiva temple at 3,680m, dating back 1,000 years. The 3.5km trail from Chopta passes through dense rhododendron and oak forest and opens to sweeping views of Garhwal peaks.
Start by 6am to reach Tungnath before clouds roll in. Temple opens at dawn and closes by 5pm.
Chandrashila Summit (4,130m)
A further 1.5km above Tungnath, Chandrashila's summit delivers a 360° panorama of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, and Badrinath ranges in one unobstructed sweep.
Push to the summit — it's only 1.5km more from Tungnath and the view is incomparable. Carry warm layers; it's 8–12°C even in summer.
Deoria Tal
A high-altitude lake 14km from Chopta that perfectly mirrors the Chaukhamba massif at sunrise. The 3km trek from Sari village takes 1.5 hrs and rewards with one of Uttarakhand's most iconic reflections.
Camp at the lakeside for the pre-dawn reflection. Day trippers miss the best light.
Rohini Bugyal (Alpine Meadow)
An unmarked meadow above Chopta reachable via a 2-hour trail through forest — completely tourist-free even in season. In May, entire hillsides turn scarlet with rhododendron blooms.
Ask your guesthouse host for the Rohini Bugyal trail — it's not marked on Google Maps but locals know it well.

Experiences in Chopta
Tungnath–Chandrashila Trek
The classic 5km return trek (3.5km to Tungnath + 1.5km to summit) through rhododendron forest to the world's highest Shiva temple and Chandrashila summit for 360° Himalayan views.
Winter Snow Trek (Dec–Feb)
Chopta receives 6–8 feet of snow in winter. Trek through completely empty snow-covered trails to Tungnath (temple closed but trail is magical) — a rare winter Himalayan experience.
Deoria Tal Camping
Camp at the lakeside and wake up to the Chaukhamba reflection on the lake surface. Night sky photography here is exceptional — zero light pollution.
Travel Tips
Before you go
Acclimatise one night at Rishikesh or Rudraprayag before going to Chopta — altitude sickness at 2,680m is real if you drive straight from the plains.
April–May for rhododendron blooms; October–November for crystal clear Himalayan views post-monsoon. Both are ideal.
December–February: Chopta is snow-covered and roads may be closed. 4WD vehicles needed from Ukhimath.
No ATMs in Chopta — carry sufficient cash from Ukhimath or Gopeshwar.
Mobile signal is patchy on Airtel/BSNL. Jio works better. Download offline maps before leaving Rishikesh.
The Ukhimath–Chopta road (22km) is narrow and shared with livestock — hire an experienced local driver.
