Chopta
The meadow most Indians haven't heard of — base of the world's highest Shiva temple
About This Place
Chopta sits quietly above the treeline in Uttarakhand — a rolling green meadow ringed by oak and rhododendron forests, offering direct sightlines to the highest Himalayan peaks in Garhwal. While nearby Kedarnath draws half a million pilgrims, Chopta receives a fraction, yet delivers the same grandeur at a fraction of the effort.
The 3.5km trail to Tungnath (3,680m), the world's highest Shiva temple, passes through dense forest alive with monal pheasants and Himalayan monals. Push another 1.5km to Chandrashila peak (4,130m) for a 360° panorama of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedarnath and Chaukhamba in one sweep.
In April and May, the rhododendron forests erupt in scarlet. In winter, the trail is buried under 6 feet of snow and the entire meadow is empty. Chopta has no luxury hotels — just basic guesthouses and a handful of camp operators — which is precisely why it remains one of Uttarakhand's finest secrets.
