Pai

762 curves from Chiang Mai — a mountain town where time zones don't apply

Mae Hong Son Province, Thailand 3–5 days recommended Best: November–February (cool and clear)
Pai· ₹35,000–55,000 per person (8 nights Thailand including flights from India)

About This Place

The road from Chiang Mai to Pai (Route 1095) has exactly 762 curves through the mountains of Mae Hong Son province. The journey is half the point — misty forested ridges, roadside waterfalls, and Karen hill tribe villages. Arrive in Pai and the town barely announces itself: a night market, a bamboo bridge over the Pai River, and mountains on every side.

Pai's thermal hot springs are 8km from town — natural spring pools at 80°C source, cooling to 38°C in the riverside bathing pools. Mo Paeng Waterfall is 18km north — a 30m multi-tiered cascade swimmable at the base. Pai Canyon (Yong Khao San) is a Badlands-style miniature canyon with a narrow ridge walk best at sunset when the ochre rocks turn deep orange.

The town fills up in December and January but never reaches Thai resort-level saturation. A bungalow with valley views typically runs ₹800–2,000 per night. Ban Santichon — a Yunnan Chinese village 4km from town — serves proper Yunnan coffee and noodles from its hilltop teahouse. Pai remains the rare place in Southeast Asia that still feels genuinely discovered.

Best spots near Pai

Pai Canyon (Yong Khao San)
nature

Pai Canyon (Yong Khao San)

A miniature Badlands-style canyon 8km from Pai — narrow ochre ridges with 30m drops on both sides, best walked at sunset when the rock turns deep orange. The 20-minute ridge walk requires some nerve but no climbing equipment. Local food stalls set up at the viewpoint by 4pm.

Arrive 45 minutes before sunset — bring rubber-soled shoes as the red clay can be slippery after rain.

Doi Suthep Temple, Chiang Mai
landmark

Doi Suthep Temple, Chiang Mai

The most sacred temple in northern Thailand — a golden chedi (stupa) visible from anywhere in Chiang Mai, perched at 1,073m on a mountain above the city. 306 serpent-guarded steps lead to the summit with views over the Ping River valley. Founded in 1383.

Go at 7am for the monks' morning alms round at the base of the stairs — a moving daily ritual that's over by 8am.

White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), Chiang Rai
landmark

White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), Chiang Rai

A contemporary Buddhist temple covered entirely in white plaster and mirrored glass — the effect in morning light is blinding and beautiful. Designed by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, it includes a mural hall with paintings of superheroes and astronauts alongside Buddhist imagery.

Visit before 9am — tour buses arrive from Chiang Mai around 10am. The golden building (Kositpipat's private art collection) on the right is worth 30 minutes.

Chiang Mai Sunday Walking Street
experience

Chiang Mai Sunday Walking Street

Every Sunday from 4pm, the entire Wualai Road fills with 500+ stalls selling silver jewellery (Chiang Mai is Thailand's silversmith capital), handmade textiles, woodcarvings, local food, and live music. The most authentic Thai night market experience in the north.

Eat dinner at the market before shopping — khao soi (coconut curry noodles) from the silver pot stalls near the gate is the finest version in Chiang Mai.

Ban Santichon — Yunnan Village
experience

Ban Santichon — Yunnan Village

A Yunnan Chinese hill tribe village 4km from Pai — descendants of KMT soldiers who settled here after 1949. Tea houses serve hand-ground Yunnan pu-erh, the hilltop cafe has 360° Mae Hong Son mountain views, and the village maintains its Yunnanese dialect and cooking.

Go in the morning when it's cool — the 15-minute walk from the village to the hilltop tea house rewards with unobstructed mountain views.

1–2 hours₹400–800 for a full dinner

Travel Tips

Before you go

Take a motion sickness tablet before the Chiang Mai–Pai minivan — the 762 curves will affect most first-timers. Book a window seat on the right side of the van.

Rent a scooter in Pai (₹300–500/day) — the hot springs, canyon, and surrounding villages are too spread out to walk.

Pai gets crowded December–January (Thai school holidays + cool season peak). Visit in March–April for lower prices and equally beautiful weather.

Khao soi — northern Thailand's coconut curry noodle soup — is the must-eat dish. The best bowls are at Khao Soi Lung Prakit Kad Kom in Chiang Mai.

A SIM card at Chiang Mai airport (AIS or DTAC) gives unlimited data for ₹350/15 days — essential for navigation on the mountain roads.
